MAYOR D’AINTY’S DRESS
Look at the pretty dress. It’s Mayor D’Ainty’s inaugural dress,
beautifully made from thick, orange carpet.
On receiving the original designs for his ceremonial robes, Mayor
D’Ainty rejected them and fell to the floor, ordering his staff
to cut around him exactly where he lay.
There is a dress-shaped hole in the council foyer carpet to this
very day.

FASHION OF THE 1970s
Cinema-goers were so taken with the extravagant costume designs
used in the 1974 movie The Great Gatsby that soon everyone
was dressing in the distinctive beige car coat and brown suede
shoes sported by director of the film, Jack Clayton. It certainly
wasn’t long before flared spacehoppers and trade union slippers
were a thing of the past.
EDWARDIAN BIG SKIRTS
You can see some of the ludicrous flared skirts that we used
to wear in the Hall of Trousers. This example was donated by the
Caroline Teasmade Historical Costume Society in Whoft and relies
on public donations to keep it billowing in the wind.

ROCK A HULA FASHION!
Dressing up as a jukebox and singing all the top pop hits at
the top of your voice was all the rage if you were of a certain
age in the 1950s (and if you are of a certain age today then you
may have done this in the past).
The outfits were later banned after Teddyboys started viciously
kicking the coins out of the elaborate costumes whilst they were
still being worn.
